Recognizing that science is not just for brainy kids, or a specialty for boys, HKUST has set up the Underwater Robot Community Engagement Project to inspire and nurture unlimited creativity among all children of both sexes, all ethnicities, and whatever their abilities and family backgrounds. We believe there should be no boundaries to learning about science and engineering.
The annual HKUST Underwater Robot Competition has been organized since 2015 not only to include mainstream primary and secondary schools but also youngsters with special educational needs and ethnic minorities. The kids’ goal is to build an underwater robot, a task in which they are mentored by HKUST students. The competition is a great platform for students from different cultural backgrounds and different educational needs to work together. Feedback from the youngsters and mentors is extremely positive, and the goal is to promote inclusion and robotics education among the wider community and roll out the Underwater Robot Competition to all districts in Hong Kong.
